10 Principles That Helped Me Grow My Blog From 0 to 145,217 Readers

Over the past decade, I've spent all day, every day, as a full-time blogger, creator, and writer.

I've experimented with all kinds of weird and wonderful content, tools, and platforms. I've designed strategies, reports, and brainstormed enough ideas for articles to keep my content calendar full for the next decade or so.

In other words, I have a lot of experience to share, and that's what I am going to do: share with you the guiding principles that have enabled me to go from 0 to something that looks like this:

That's why today I am going to share with you 10 principles that have helped me build some of the most popular blogs on the web.

1. The Netflix Method

New blogs need to take a "Netflix" approach to content, rather than an "HBO" approach.

Netflix is known for casting a wide net and producing a lot of different TV shows. If you browse through Netflix, you’ll notice a ton of shows with only one season. That’s because if Netflix produces a show that isn’t a hit, they abandon it. But once Netflix finds a show that’s popular, they double down on it. They promote it harder, they create new seasons of it, and they even produce spin-offs of it.

HBO takes a more conservative approach. They tend to only produce shows they know have a good chance of being successful. This results in less content, but higher quality content overall.

That doesn’t mean bloggers should focus on producing low-quality content. Instead, you need to simply cast a wide net.

And this is the principle that I've always adhered to, no matter what. I've always understood that producing a huge volume of content is not just the best way to bridge the gap between the quality of my work and the quality of the work I admire, but also to better understand what type of content works best, what my audience wants most of all, and what steps to take in order to improve.
